The new MAC2400 - Twin Stack air compressor by Makita is blowing away the competition. With built-in features such as a super quiet motor that draws only 12.3 amps to operate, a lower 1720 RPM rating and a heavy duty Intake Air Filter system like no other, its easy to see how this unit will out last and outperform everyone else. Low Amp Draw - Reduces incidences of tripped breakers and voltage drop that can cause premature motor failure. Large automotive style industrial air filter for increased air intake and greater efficiency. Built-in thermal overload for additional motor protection.
found in MAC2400's reviews:
Even a dummy can operate this... - Easy to operate Electric unit holds down the noise.
Excellent performer! - For the home shop or light/medium duty construction, this is an excellent piece of equipment.
Quiet as can be... - If you have a small shop or space where a compressor is close to your work, you will appreciate how quiet the 1725 rpm motor is on this compressor. The unit is heavy, and not likely to provide enough air to simultaneously run 2 heavy framing guns, but it shines in an environment where you are running finish nailers in a closed space.
Best in class - I think it's the best for the following:
A) This compressor just purrs.
B) Over-built compressor compared to tank size - so cycle times are very short - if using light-duty tools, it doesn't run much anyway.
C) No leaks - holds its air pressure seemingly forever when turned off (not that you shouldn't release pressure when done using it).
D) The air filter is a miniature version of an old-time car air filter. The glaring exception is the air filter hanging off the side - I can see this part's going to be replaced at some point when I throw it in a truck bed. In this case, the air filter is just thrown in loose inside the box - mine broke one of the gauge glasses.

Minnesota Charlie - The compressor arrived in good condition, no damage during shipping. I used it with several air tools like ratchet, impact wrench, stapler, finish nailer, and framing nailer. The air cleaner seems loose and doesn't fit as snugly as it should to the motor.
Very pleased - This is my first air compressor, and I just received it yesterday so can't vouch for long-term quality, but I just wanted folks to know that it has ZERO damage. The air filter was packaged in a heavy plastic baggie along with the oil and manual. The thin paper manual has a few indentations from the wingnut on the air filter pressing into it, but the compressor unit itself is showroom clean. I'm also impressed with how quickly the motor charges the tank.
Perfect compressor - quiet & powerful - I needed a compressor to put up a fence, install mouldings and refinish my basement. Well, it's a compressor and they ARE heavy. Especially a high-quality compressor like this one.

Additional comments:

The finned discharge tubing on this thing is fantastic - if you've never had your hand seared like a steak after touching discharge tubing on a compressor, you haven't truly felt pain. I've brushed the tubing with the motor running on this one (accidentaly) and where my hand normally would have STUCK, it was only warm. I can use the compressor in my basement shop and can barely hear it running on the main level.

If you're looking for a high-quality, oil-lube (don't know why anyone would go for a non-oil unit) compressor that will last for years, look no further.

Decent compressor if you can get one without damage - I researched portable compressors for months before deciding on the MAC2400. Even with weight I was quite pleased with the compressor but my buying experience was much less.
My first compressor from Amazon had a broken plastic motor cover which wasn't caused by shipping damage.
I sent it back and Amazon had a replacement back to me in 3-4 days, Quick!, but that compressor also was damaged. The air cleaner housing was thrown on top of the compressor and beat up the control panel and one gauge from bouncing around. I was told to contact Amazon and after a week of waiting on Amazon, I was told that they could not send part (it would void warranty if replaced) and they were not going to send a replacement compressor. I packaged up the second compressor and sent back. I wasn't going to order another brand compressor from Amazon as I didn't want the hassle if damaged again. looking at Ridgid as I really didn't want a Dewalt or the Porter Cable pancake compressor which they carried. I bought a Ridgid model with a higher cfm rating, larger air tanks, wheels, handle and it came out of box without a scratch. After moving it around the house and up the stairs, I don't know how long I would have enjoyed carrying the MAC2400 or any other brand compressor that weighs 70-80lbs.

Overall the MAC2400 looked and sounded like a good compressor for the short time I had it but makes me wonder how well they are built, with so many problems between packaging and broken parts inside cartons not caused by shipping damage on the Mac700's and a few of these. If you are not in a hurry for a compressor and/or don't care about cosmetic condtion out of the box (if damaged) then Amazon is the place to buy with their best price.

Quiet, portable and powerful - I shopped around for weeks before I decided on this compressor. I wanted a compressor for home that I could run an impact on or a DA sander but I also wanted something portable that I could run a nailer on. I had planned to buy two compressors but this compressor will do both. This compressor is surprisingly quiet and is quite powerful. The two stage allows it to provide the power of a compressor twice it's capacity and uses twice the horsepower.) So if you're buying one for home or stationary use that will be run a lot, look at buying a 2-stage 240 volt compressor, it will save you money when the electric bill comes. Recovery time is what you should look for and don't expect any compressor to keep quiet for long when you're running a continuous tool like a sander. Something to consider if you're serious about buying this compressor is look at the CPFC2TV3520WK, it's the same compressor with a 20 gallon horizontal tank but it has a four port remote regulator which might be of use or interest to you. I'll post again in the future once I've used the compressor more and know it a little better. I would recommend renting a compressor or borrowing one from someone who has it prior to making your decision if you haven't used them enough to know what you want from one.
Good Compromise - The compressor is very easy to set up and use. The compressor has a very solid feel and is very heavy. They are adequate for moving the compressor around the garage, but would not work well on stairs or outside. In my opinion the compressor is loud, particularly if you are in a closed room. However the rumble of the motor is much more tolerable than the high pitched whine of some of the other compressors I checked out. I have not experienced any electrical problems with breakers in my old house.
great choice for general purpose home use - The two-stage compressor means that it is quieter than a single-stage unit, and should mean better reliability as well.

I've used some fairly demanding air tools with it, such as air drills and die grinders. The motor comes on early and stays on under continuous air drill usage, but it manages to keep up.

    Product Description
8 Gallon, 15A Cast Iron Air Compressor, Oil Lube Pump With 2.3 Running HP Motor, 5.
    found in HL5501's reviews:
Sturdy, portable, cheap oil-lubricated compressor... But noisy! - Pros: Affordable, portable, sturdy, very heavy-duty power cord,
    oil-lubed dependability.

Let me start by saying that I can't live without an air compressor. Those of you who don't have one have no idea how much you'll use it and what an integral part of any household project or repair it will become when you finally have one. That being said, let me explain why I bought this particular compressor and what I think about it thus far.

Until recently, I had an 8-gallon oil-free compressor that was handed down to me from my dad after I bought him a large stationary garage unit about 6 years ago. This thing lasted about 13 years with very regular use with a few repairs over the years. This is absolutely unheard of with an oil-free compressor. In order to replace the blue tarp roof provided by FEMA with some actual shingles, I will need a compressor to power my roofing and framing nailers. Portability and reliability are important factors in order to assist with the reconstruction efforts of the community once the repairs to my home are complete. This is why I decided on an oil-lubricated compressor. Although I had great success with the aforementioned oil-free compressor, I do understand that this was more the exception than the rule. It is hard to find an oil-lubed compressor that is both portable and affordable., making them very difficult to get in and out of your truck/car by yourself, let alone getting them up a flight of stairs. Also, the plastic shroud that covers the motor/pump is slightly cracked because it contacts a part underneath it. This compressor does not come with oil, even though the instruction manual says "only use the oil that was shipped with the compressor." The other thing that you will run into is that it does not come with a coupler to connect an air hose to. Although this is very common for air tools not to come with the required fittings to connect it to a hose, there is one difference here. I have never seen a quick-disconnect air hose connector (the hose end that has the sleeve to release the connection) with male threads on it. (a brass pipe nipple for you plumbers out there)

    Use:
The Campbell Hausfeld HL5501 overall seems to be a very good compressor. If you are looking into this compressor because of the reduced noise level that oil-lubed compressors are known for, then you will be disappointed. This compressor is every bit as loud as any comparable oil-free unit.

    Conclusion:
I would recommend this compressor to the handy home user that wants the reliability and longevity of an oil-lube compressor, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I would not recommend this compressor if the noise level is a big issue, but be prepared to spend a lot more money for a belt-driven unit.
