Air Cube 1 - This compressor is a contractor's dream.4 CFM @ 100 PSI air delivery. This 1-1/2 foot cube gas compressor fits in the trunk of a midsize vehicle. This is the only gas power compressor that I have worked with that a single average size person can move (alone). The engine optimizes fuel efficiency by automatically slowing to an ideal speed when the air tanks are full. The fuel line should be shutoff before turning off the engine to ensure an easy startup.

The engine, even while operating faster to fill the air tanks, is relatively quiet allowing a normal conversation a few feet away. It is quieter than the pancake compressors I have used.

Each air tank has a separate moisture drain valve to keep the tanks from rusting on the inside.

* The air regulator comes with two 1/4" female NPT thread connections. Since I could not remove the stripped hex plug, I used the air gage connection to add a tee. Husky (Home Depot) has a brass tee, skew number 661-219 for this purpose.

Great compressor - This is a great little compressor with good output for the price.
Mine arrived with a broken part which was no fault of the manufacturer, but they prompted sent me a replacement part without a problem.

Great Product - shipping bad - I like Mikita tools for their quality build and reliabity. Our box was clearly tossed around or banged into during shippment which broke off the air filter assembly that screws into the cylinder head. To avoid the HUGE hassle of returning/shipping the compressor to Amazon, incurring shipping charges that were initially free when I ordered the compressor, lugging it back to UPS, and waiting for who knows how long for a replacement, I contacted Mikita and got a replacement part directly from them. The part was provided free for pick-up and was offered under warranty.
An Airbrushing Powerhouse -

I use it to power airbrushes along with an added-on airbrush regulator/gauge/moisture trap. This is exactly what I wanted for airbrushing. It has a much longer lifespan than "airbrush compressors". The airbrushes work consistently all throughout the refill phase. This is the muscle car of airbrush compressors even though it was made in Taiwan.

This is good to consider as the maximum desirable amp draw for common household electrical outlets.

It only runs for 15 seconds to recharge from 100 to 125+ psi, which is great. 5 to 10 minutes of airbrushing in silence, and when it comes on it does have some volume, but it is so much less noise than an oilless.

I had to tighten down the crankcase cover (Ref# 29, Part# 304013-E) because it was leaking oil. It's the large exposed part of the motor that you can easily reach and tighten up with a screwdriver.

Always damaged - I had the compressor sent out two times, both times, it arrived damaged.

The compressor looked great, felt great, only wish Makita would have packaged it with more padding. I called Makita and they wouldn't send me the broken part unless I went to one of their distributors, and my nearest one is 40 minutes away. Amazon has been great about both returns, but they won't send me a third compressor.

Great little compressor - I've used this guy for about a month on a siding project, and it's worked very nicely. I haven't tried it with two nailers at once; that might push it a bit, but I can't say for sure. Be sure to fill with oil and install the air filter before starting. It required drilling out the check valve, retapping the threads, buying an equivalent part at the hardware store, and reinstalling. Serious PITA, but cost was minimal and repair works fine.

All in all, a great little compressor, and the best choice if noise is a concern.

Great little compressor - I have had this compressor for a couple of weeks now and really like it. I chose this model over the very popular oil-free pancake compressors mainly for it's compact size and low noise level.

The unit is compact, but much heavier duty than similar Cr*ftman compressors I saw at Sears. I did have a problem where the plastic oil filler cap was cracked, but Makita quickly sent me a replacement part under warantee. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for an occasional use compressor and does not want something large or loud.
Recieved damaged, Makita service hopeless - Just received this compressor from Amazon/ToolKing.
Called Makita to see if I could get the part under Warranty.
Makita has a problem in the packing of these compressor's which leaves the valve exposed to being crushed inside the container. If you need to put the compressor into service right away, I suggest buying local or
unfortunately another mfg.The compressor is quiet, and seems to
run ok, I have only done the initial start up though.Seems to be a great little compressor.Good luck
Ron
UPDATE: Sorry for the late post.(supervisor)The compressor has been in service now for around 8mo.I did solder a new elbow onto a lower area of the check valve which works out better when the compressor rolls on its side.

I'll let you know when I get a chance to use it! - After reading 45 reviews, most of which described the unit arriving damaged in one way or another, it would have been wise on my part to find a source for this compressor where I could pick it up.
It would appear that the sight glass for the oil level protrudes beyond where it could be protected from impact.

The other Reviews are Correct, this is a great compressor - This is a quality compressor. The weight comes from steel, not plastic parts.

The compressor is just as quiet as others report.

Why did I get this compressor? In sum, (1) I wanted a GOOD quality tool that was not Chineese junk, (2) I wanted at least 4 cfm for tools and (2) I did not want to spend a fortune. There seems to be several classes or levels of compressor in the lower price range. Unless you are getting a specialized mini-compressor just for a small brad gun, the $125-175 compressors are mostly junk: loud and rough. This Makita is in the next step up, with compressors in the $225 to 325 range. Most of this second tier are either made for just for job sites or are just bigger cheaply made compressors.

I chose the Makita over the Dewalt for one reason: quiet. The Dewalt is an excellent compressor, but you cannot use it next to you in an exclosed shop -- its too loud. It is a very well made little compressor. It has a dual personality: it works and looks great in the corner of the shop AND is perfect for taking to a job site or the back yard.

The compressor seems to live up to its specs. When I went to use a Snap-On 7200 3/8" air ratchet, the performance was just adequate. Then I read the spec for the ratchet and it calls for 4. But then again, that is not the type of tool I wanted this for.

I have not owned a compressor is many years. I looked long and hard for the best of all worlds: quality, size, price, and cfm. As an advanced and serious home workshop dude, this review is not written for the pros. But for a serious homeowner that appreciates quality tools and needs a general purpose compressor, I believe I found the perfect compressor.

Lastly, no shop came close to Amazon on total price, in large part due to the free shipping.

Decent compressor if you can get one without damage - I researched portable compressors for months before deciding on the MAC2400. I also have to agree with others as this is a heavy unit to be lugging around daily but I knew that before ordering. Even with weight I was quite pleased with the compressor but my buying experience was much less.
My first compressor from Amazon had a broken plastic motor cover which wasn't caused by shipping damage.
I sent it back and Amazon had a replacement back to me in 3-4 days, Quick!, but that compressor also was damaged. The air cleaner housing was thrown on top of the compressor and beat up the control panel and one gauge from bouncing around.
I called Makita and they would not cover damage but could send me the control panel for $45. I was told to contact Amazon and after a week of waiting on Amazon, I was told that they could not send part (it would void warranty if replaced) and they were not going to send a replacement compressor. I packaged up the second compressor and sent back. I wasn't going to order another brand compressor from Amazon as I didn't want the hassle if damaged again. looking at Ridgid as I really didn't want a Dewalt or the Porter Cable pancake compressor which they carried. I bought a Ridgid model with a higher cfm rating, larger air tanks, wheels, handle and it came out of box without a scratch. After moving it around the house and up the stairs, I don't know how long I would have enjoyed carrying the MAC2400 or any other brand compressor that weighs 70-80lbs.

Overall the MAC2400 looked and sounded like a good compressor for the short time I had it but makes me wonder how well they are built, with so many problems between packaging and broken parts inside cartons not caused by shipping damage on the Mac700's and a few of these. If you are not in a hurry for a compressor and/or don't care about cosmetic condtion out of the box (if damaged) then Amazon is the place to buy with their best price. I you need one right away and are particular about quality, I would seriously look elsewhere to purchase.

compressor try's hard but comes up a bit short -
Of course it was the compressor which broke, the part with the 90 day warranty.
Senco is a good company, but I think this little compressor is not quite up to the quality of their other products.
In my case it was the 1/4" copper tubing which brings the air to the tank that failed.
I have fixed it with some liquid steel, since I'm on a job with it, I'm hoping the repair lasts till I have time to replace to tubing.
I have used this to build two large bookcase and cabinet projects so far, and in doing so I have learned the compressors limitations. I bought this combo for the light weight
of the compressor, so I guess there must be some compromises. This won't take the place of more powerful compressors,
but it is great for carrying to and from a job. I'm not sure I would
recommend this product, the 90 day warranty on the compressor is a big negative.

This Porter-Cable 2-horsepower, 6-gallon pancake compressor transports easily but has plenty of capacity and power--enough to support heavy use of brad and finish nailers and moderate use of framing nailers. Features include a high-flow regulator, an easy-to-read air pressure gauge, automatic thermal overload protection, an industrial-style quick-connect body in the air outlet, and a long-life motor with replaceable brushes. The compressor weighs 32 pounds and has a handle built into the motor housing, so it's relatively portable. This Porter-Cable is as convenient and easy to use as any compressor out there, and it's just about ideal for brad and finish nailers that are being used inside people's homes on a regular basis. --Jonathon Tudor

From the Manufacturer
This oil-free 2-hp pancake-style air compressor has a new high pressure design that provides 28-percent more usable air! This allows more run time and less down time. The high-flow regulator keeps the tank pressure between 120 PSI and 150 PSI, allowing a greater reserve air capacity. The oil-free pump allows for maintenance-free use as well as use on slopes without the risk of oil leakage. Lightweight for portability, this compressor has plenty of power to fire all brad and finishing nailers as well as moderate usage of roofing and framing nailers. COOL TOOL - THE PORTABILITY FAR OUTWEIGHS ANY DISADVANTAGES IT MIGHT HAVE IN SPEED.
What you see is Not what you Get! - )part# D20668.
Once pneumatic, you never go back - The Porter-Cable 2HP 6-gallon pancake compressor is a reasonably powerful and reasonably portable air compressor. I think it's the perfect machine for the somewhat-serious do-it-yourselfer (like me). I only recently purchased one but I am already sold on pneumatic tools, which the PC 6-gallon compressor operates surprisingly well. Although many pneumatic tools, such as air hammers, drills, and sanders, consume quite a bit of air (generally in the neighborhood of 5 CFM at 90 PSI), I have found that my PC compressor does just fine with its modest 2. Unless you need to operate the tools continuously for long periods, the 6-gallon tank provides sufficient ballast to keep them happily buzzing and spinning at full power. My one complaint is that the motor and compressor are a bit louder than I expected. Then again, the noise of the compressor is hardly noticeable above the din of an air hammer, so I'm not sure it really matters.

If you enjoy using power tools and you have not yet experienced the pleasures of pneumatic gizmos, you should consider purchasing a small but serious compressor like the PC 2HP 6-gallon pancake. It's truly amazing how versatile compressed air is; basically any tool that runs on electricity also comes in a pneumatic version (well, except for arc welders). And, in my admittedly novice opinion, the pneumatic versions have many advantages; they are more durable (with surprisingly few moving parts), often cheaper, and usually more powerful than their electric counterparts. It makes so much sense to have all your tools share one powerful motor instead of replicating motors endlessly; that is, if you can part with your cordless tools.

But be warned! If you take the plunge into pneumatic tools, there is an endless stream of items you will find yourself purchasing: air tool lubricants and cleaning kits, in-line oilers, air hoses and gauges, quick connectors, air filters, oil-water separators, Teflon tape, universal air hose joints, air manifolds, blowguns with assorted nozzles, etc.)

One odd thing I've noticed is that the PC 6-gallon compressor is virtually identical to the Craftsman 6-gallon compressor, right down to the paint job.

Porter-Cable’s solved the compressor mobility problem on two levels with this tool. First, and most impressively, it’s got a two-port removable console for remote air regulation and higher air pressure right where you’re working. And the compressor itself has wheels and an extension handle, making life easier on you.

Let’s face it: This compressor’s big, heavy and loud, with a max psi of 150. You can run three or four guns at once off it with a splitter and have no air supply problems whatsoever. It’s built tough for the job site (and the trips to and from), with a full roll cage to shield your pump and motor. And last but not least, it’s oil-free and therefore maintenance-free.5 gallon, oil-free contractor style compressor is packed with features. It starts with the oil-free pump which is designed for durability and long use. It also packs 150 PSI in the tank for longer tool run time. The high-flow air regulator and two-port removable console are winning combinations for contractors. Having the ability to remove the console gives the user the opportunity to remote air regulation and gain higher air pressure closer to the job site. The full roll cage frame adds protection for the pump and motor. Include mobility kit for increased portability on the jobsite. Air delivery at 40 PSI: 7.

Used it today for the first time - I install windows as part of my job. I use an air hammer to break out the old windows and they require a lot of air. This compressor worked well with some catch up time but hey, it's only a 4 1/2 gallon tank. Cord wrap is fairly useless, handle makes it portable, regulator worked, switch and air release are protected.
    Dependable and... dependable -
I've been using this compressor for about 3 months now. Nailing, stapling, and air cleaning. I love the concept of being able to detach the valves' console in order to bring it closer to the work place (need to purchase another hose for this ability, however).
The pressure, for the most part, maintains its equillibrium. What I don't particularly care for about the unit is the airflow adjustment valve. and I don't trust it for the compressor's duraction.

05 update: I noticed one reviewer griped about this tank's compressor turning on frequently while using an air wratchet or something. that's an unfair assessment. Using such tools would cause the same reaction on any tank with the same air gallon capacity.

When Quality & Quiet Matter More Than Price & Power - Lately I've been tapped by my son's school for various projects such as bookshelves and work carts. A number of casework and trim projects are ahead for my household projects. I decided to speed things up by shifting to dado/rabbet joinery held with brads during glueup instead of biscuits. I researched compressors carefully around town and on the Web. Compressors available at the Borg and various local tool shops are gawdawful loud, heavy, and look to be made of cheap plastic and pot metal. I don't expect to use the unit for more than finish nailing, inflating tires, and blowing dust around the shop. The compressor will be carried around and used indoors. I don't mind paying more for tools that will last a long time. I'm looking for quiet, durable, and light.

The 1/2 HP Thomas seems to be right for me. The unit is light enough to carry around easily, and its shape rides comfortably beside your walking legs (unlike pancake compressors).

The compressor only puts out about 1 CFM and has a 2 gallon tank. It will drive about a dozen nails before cycling on. There is plenty of capacity for inflating bike tires and topping up car tires. I only get several seconds of shop blowing before the unit cycles on, but that's OK for my home workshop use.

You will not be happy with this compressor unless your needs and preferences are similar to mine. It really doesn't put out or hold much air. So far it's looking like a good choice for me though. No durability experience since I haven't had the compressor for long.

An air compressor isn't one of those must-have tools for the homeowner—-that is, until you've used one. This eight-gallon model puts out an average of 4 standard cubic feet per minute at 90 psi, plenty for any task the homeowner or hobbyist has in mind. The HL5501 has plenty of power for a stapler or nailer; imagine how quickly a chair rail could go up. We like this model because it's compact, sturdy and, with a little maintenance and care, it will last for years and years. Because it's a smaller unit, its air delivery is lower, so make sure you check the air requirements of the tools you intend to use it with. For its size and capacity, it's a good, hard worker that will serve the homeowner well.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

    Product Description
8 Gallon, 15A Cast Iron Air Compressor, Oil Lube Pump With 2.
    found in HL5501's reviews:
Sturdy, portable, cheap oil-lubricated compressor... But noisy! - Pros: Affordable, portable, sturdy, very heavy-duty power cord,
    oil-lubed dependability.
Cons: Noisy (for an oil-lube), poor quality wheel hardware
(could've been an isolated problem on only my unit).

Let me start by saying that I can't live without an air compressor. Those of you who don't have one have no idea how much you'll use it and what an integral part of any household project or repair it will become when you finally have one. That being said, let me explain why I bought this particular compressor and what I think about it thus far.

Until recently, I had an 8-gallon oil-free compressor that was handed down to me from my dad after I bought him a large stationary garage unit about 6 years ago. This thing lasted about 13 years with very regular use with a few repairs over the years. This is absolutely unheard of with an oil-free compressor. In order to replace the blue tarp roof provided by FEMA with some actual shingles, I will need a compressor to power my roofing and framing nailers. Portability and reliability are important factors in order to assist with the reconstruction efforts of the community once the repairs to my home are complete.

I always try to buy tools that will last a very long time and are as reliable as possible, for obvious reasons. This is why I decided on an oil-lubricated compressor. Although I had great success with the aforementioned oil-free compressor, I do understand that this was more the exception than the rule. It is hard to find an oil-lubed compressor that is both portable and affordable., making them very difficult to get in and out of your truck/car by yourself, let alone getting them up a flight of stairs. Also, it's not uncommon to pay $400+ for one of these, making it impractical for most home users and do-it-yourselfers. Many oil-lubed units only run on 240V, so those of us without that luxury have to look for the 120V versions to run in our homes. Also, the plastic shroud that covers the motor/pump is slightly cracked because it contacts a part underneath it. On one of the wheels, the threads of the bolt completely stripped with very little effort at all. I may replace both wheels with some larger pneumatic ones for added portability in the future. This compressor does not come with oil, even though the instruction manual says "only use the oil that was shipped with the compressor." The other thing that you will run into is that it does not come with a coupler to connect an air hose to. Although this is very common for air tools not to come with the required fittings to connect it to a hose, there is one difference here. I have never seen a quick-disconnect air hose connector (the hose end that has the sleeve to release the connection) with male threads on it. (a brass pipe nipple for you plumbers out there)

    Use:
The Campbell Hausfeld HL5501 overall seems to be a very good compressor. If you are looking into this compressor because of the reduced noise level that oil-lubed compressors are known for, then you will be disappointed. This compressor is every bit as loud as any comparable oil-free unit.

    Conclusion:
I would recommend this compressor to the handy home user that wants the reliability and longevity of an oil-lube compressor, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. I would not recommend this compressor if the noise level is a big issue, but be prepared to spend a lot more money for a belt-driven unit.
