Not too big or too small - Can run my air ratchet or 1/2' impact quite a long time without turning on. I occasionally will sand and paint but it's not a major use for me (Ihate sanding and painting). A sander (especially a high-speed unit) uses an awful lot of air and under heavy sander use I think this unit would be "strained".
Advantages of oiless: Should not be affected by cold conditions, cleaner running, no need for oil separator when spraying, no need to worry about servicing it for oil changes etc. The only thing they did not include and I wish they had, is a quick pressure release for the "hose side".
Bottom line if you need a compressor but the smaller 15 to 20 gal types are not enough and a big 60 to 80 gal. is too much check this out you'll be glad you did! It seems to fit right in the middle offering good performance, relative quiet, ease and convenience of use and reasonable portability in a high quality well built unit.

Maximum air power! More delivered air (CFM) gives you the power to do the job right and in less time.
    found in SS3L3's reviews:
A cheap way to get more CFM... but its still cheap. - This air compressor is identical to my Ingersoll Rand SS3L3 compressor that I purchased through Northern Tool in the early summer of 2005. This is the first air compressor that I have ever owned, so it was a learning experience from the start.

It is recommended that you purchase the IR SS3L3 startup kit as the compressor is delivered to you without any oil in it. When I plugged in the compressor to test it out, I found that the motor continued to run even as the gauge on the tank passed 130 psi. I ordered a new switch from Ingersoll Rand for ~ $35 and this fixed the problem.

I ran the compressor off and on for several months without any major issues. I used it for several things. a little bit of die grinding, I rotated the tires on my car using the impact wrench and air ratchet, I used it to blow dust off my work bench and check the air in my tires on a routine basis. I bought the compressor because I have several project cars, and I would like to begin the serious work of restoring them. Recently, I have been looking at plans for a sandblasting cabinet, and I am starting to doubt that this compressor will stand up to the task of sand blasting for extended periods. Things I have learned about the compressor since its purchase that have led me to this conclusion:

    1. (I swap between my compressor and my dryer on the only 230V outlet in my house). This borderline false advertising is similar to peak and RMS power ratings in audio amplifiers, though it is fairly standard operating procedure to rate motors in this fashion. Though it is quieter than a direct drive unit like the 30 gallon compressors sold at most hardware stores, 3450 RPM is still quite fast. With the pulley ratios, the compressor crank spins at 1200 RPM. Heavier duty systems might have the AC motor running at 1200-1750 RPM with the compressor running at ~700 RPM or less, resulting in a much quieter setup. If I could do it over, I would consider a slower, beefier unit with a true power rating that runs at a slower, more quiet speed. There is apparently no available rebuild kit for the compressor itself, according to the local IR dealer, though they do sell gaskets and the oiling kit. It is a very simple design, consisting of essentially three parts; a cylinder head, cylinder block, and crankcase. It is a two cylinder, single stage compressor. The "valves" in the head are what I believe are called "reed valves", which are simply spring loaded "fingers" that cover holes in the cylinder head, and they move with the blowing/sucking of air as the pistons move in the cylinders (no mechanical actuation of the valves). The compressor can run fairly hot, especially when pressurizing the tank from zero pressure. I would like to add an intercooler in line to the tank as the compressed air is quite hot, and I think the compressor itself could use some more cooling. I bought some copper to fab up a larger heat sink for the compressor housing, though I haven't made it yet. I think this will make the unit run much cooler, and therefore extend its life. The flywheel on the compressor is designed to move air over the unit, but I still think the design needs improvement. This makes me want to install a condensor between the compressor and tank). Copper tubing is used to route compressed air from the compressor to the tank, and I think some improvements could be made there, as well. One could remove the compressor to change the oil, but a better soultion would be to insert a ball valve in the oil drain plug for easy draining.

IR sells the SS5L5, which uses the same 60 gallon tank, but a 5 HP split phase 3450 RPM motor running a different two piston single stage compressor. For someone considering more power, this unit is still quite affordable, but it will still have some of the drawbacks of this system.

My biggest complaints are the use of the split phase motor, the relatively cheap design of the compressor (aluminum rods and lack of rod bearings), the flimsy pressure switch, and the cheap fittings used all over the machine. I will continue to use this unit for some time, but I am already considering either building my own low RPM, true 4-5 HP air compressor from various parts suppliers, or just purchasing a new one from a company like Eaton Compressor.

For someone that needs something better than the cheap 30 gallon direct drive units sold at most hardware stores, this unit is more than adequate. However, if you are considering something for medium-heavy duty, you might want to consider something with a little more quality, and therefore more cost. Like houses, I think good advice for someone looking to buy an air compressor is "buy the most you can afford". I for one like the idea of a compressor running at a quiet 750 RPM at a mere 73 dBa, as opposed to my high revving 1200 RPM SS3L3. Meanwhile, my criticisms of this unit are based on what I'd like to see in a compressor, that is all. I thought I was paying for more than I got. With authorized IR dealers all over the country, getting parts (like gaskets, pressure switches, and oiling kits) is pretty painless.

A Bostitch satisfied customer - I spent 6 Months reviewing numerous tools for my first woodworking shop. Part of my selection came from learnerd advise from a world class cabinetmaker, who has been in the trade for over 40 Years. I needed a compressor and the combo packs offered the best value for the money. That combo was my choice, and after using them for several Months now, I am very satisfied with both the nailer and compressor. Between these three tools and compressor, my projects can all be accomplished with ease.

Depth-of-drive adjustment to match nail depth to the application
Quick release nosepiece for easy clearing of jams

    found in CFFN250A's reviews:
Excellent Value - Get this one! - You get a top quality nailer and a good air compressor too - in one ready to use out of the box kit.

NAILER: Quiet, effortless to use, comfortable handle, and a great range of nails (3/4" - 2 1/2"). No more drilling, hammering, and setting nails! Can be set up as "trigger fire", or for real speed, "bottom fire".

COMPRESSOR: Lightweight - but a little noisy. It also doesn't trip the breaker like my other compressor does, due to the low current draw (max.

If you already have a small compressor then the nailer (FN250A) is still a great choice by itself. But if you need a nailer and a compressor, this is by far the best value.

Maybe a good compressor, but beware of shipping - I ordered my P-C 3HP/4GAL compressor from Amazon, and their tool supplier, Tool Crib, shipped the unit to me via UPS. When I unpacked the compressor there was a broken piece of plastic in the bottom of the box. After reading the Owner's Manual and starting the break-in procedure I realized the plastic piece was the on/off switch! Using plastic for such a high-use piece like the on/off switch is a very poor design.

I took the compressor to the local Porter-Cable service center and they tell me the boxes the P-C compressors come in are NOT designed to handle the rigorous treatment of UPS shipping. The compressor is very heavy and the support inside the box is just flimsy cardboard, so the unit will shift alot during UPS shipment. I'm just wondering what other parts may have been damaged in the shipping. Won't know until the replacement part comes in and we can turn the unit on.

Be advised about this shipping problem with this compressor.

Goldblatt Trowel Trade Tools GB13300 Pattern Pistol with Compressor - Once I opened the box, I was dismayed to find a bag of parts requiring assembly. One part, the oil reservoir was completely broken. I immediately sent the unit out for repair. Fortunately, the repairman was able to use parts from an old non-working unit to fix the new unit so it is operational.

Great But ... - I have several compressors, but since this is light and runs on 15 am circuits it is the preference for small volume needs such as small nail guns, tires and especially jobs where transporting the compressor is required. It performed almost flawlessly for more than a decade - the exception being cold weather performance - they start poorly (or not at all) when cold. Also, one should be aware that they only produce a limited SCFM and are suitable for only low CFM applications. Example, a framer and helper will easily outrun the production capability of the compressor with one gun. On a hot day with poor air circulation the motor start capacitor blew. Since this was the only issue with the tool I decided it made sense to repair. My standard motor repair shop wouldn't touch it. The Emglo repair center wanted an exhorbitant amount for the capacitor ($$). The time I spent calling around and shopping for the replacement part far exceeded the value of simply replacing the compressor unit. The advantages of convenience, weight and maintenance free performance come at a price.

Caution - First of all this is a light-weight, cost effective compressor. It worked fine for me for over a year and is easy to carry around.

BUT, this thing is realy loud, especially for its size.

I recommend buying a different compressor. The part that broke off was not the large motor section but the small separate connector section containing the pressure dials.

Compact unit, poor packaging - my unit arrived with the plastic air intake filter housing broken.

Other than the poor packaging; the unit is easy to operate, stable, compact, and provides plenty of air for general household use. Its duty cycle is limited to 30 minutes per hour, so it is not intended for heavy continuous use. But as long as you are not working at top speed, it will keep up with general painting and nailing.
Don't let the handle fool you. - I bought it to replace a 1 1/2 horse 2 gallon compressor because it's twice as powerful. I know now why most compressors this size have wheels. I wanted an air compressor that could inflate tractor tires and power air tools. I recommed this to any one looking for an good air compressor that stays for the most part in one place.
This Portable Compressor is Rugged and Well Built ! - Surprised and impressed! I looked at Home Depot and Lowes and decided to order this air compressor to save the Tax and the trouble of bring it home. The best part is that I didn't have to stuff this big box in the back of my car to bring it home.

Looking at the other brands of portable compressors I really like how well this one is built.

I expect to be using this tool for years to come.
Don't know yet - Kimco, in Delta, OH, told me they would send a call tag for the defective unit and send me another one. I spoke with the owner of the company, Kim Allen, and he said that I would need to have it repaired under the warranty. After several calls to the toll-free number in the manual to the factory, I was put in touch with a repair facility an hour away and was told they don't stock the part but could order it and get it back to me in a few days.

This whole situation did not sound like the legendary customer service Porter Cable is known for.

I am now waiting for Kimco's Porter Cable rep, Jim White, to return my call. Hopefully, PC will come though without me spending four round trip hours and a week without a compressor. As for Kimco, I wouldn't buy from them again.
Frustrated with the technical assistance - When I bought my CPF23400S, I did it because I saw some good comments about Porter Cable equipments, and most important, they have a lot of places for technical assistance.
I received my compressor and unpack it. I went there with the compressor and they took it and said to leave it there for one day, and on the next day they should call me to pick it up. But, after 3 days, they still didn't have changed the little tank pressure gauge, and they said "we are waiting for Porter Cable to send this piece to us, you have to wait until next week". Ohhh! Come on!!!
I can't believe that! The most common and cheap part of a compressor they don't have in stock!?
Is that kind of technical assistance we have from Porter Cable when we just buy a brand new compressor and need it working???
I think I should send it back and bought another from another company, because, now, I'm just waiting and I can't do my job. Who's gonna pay for my loss?.
